Recently, a newsviner here has been posting a series of articles blasting those who do not agree with his positions or organizations he supports by publishing a series of articles that do NOT allow any commenting.  To me, this is no better than trolling, since he is able to have HIS opinion constantly taking space from others who DO allow others to comment on their ideas and positions.

So, what do you all think?  Should authors have the RIGHT to NOT allow comments, or, should they have to submit any such REQUEST to be reviewed before ALLOWED to do so, or, should this just be banned, period, as promoting a from of trolling.

Removed from US News, Meta goes in Not News.

Also, Tyler and I both agree that if an author doesn't wish to have comments on their articles, that is a-ok.

ryouashi12,

Ignore them. Anyone so (__insert adjective here__) as to think they have all the answers and do not wish to stand behind and defend their opinion remarks is too closed minded on the issue to be bothered with anyway.

well stopping commentary is typically what the Mainstream media and extreme media do as the norm.

no comments is PRE-censorship

the poster usually comments somewhere. so you have to click on their name, and find a comment to reply to.. there you can address the trolled article..

not allowing comments also ignores the COH

rules #2 and #4 are pretty clear about discussions

#2 Newsvine's primary purpose is to provide a place for people to share and discuss topics relating to the news

and as such the act of not allowing comments violates rule #5

Would you be against having a private discussion article readable by the public? One that friends request to be part of?

The above is a round-about way of not being slowed by trollers. Personally, I am for inhibiting access to those on the author's Ignore List.

I agree. I think it is up to the author, unless Newsvine has a problem with it. For publicity, the Newsvine staff might want all the comments for "participation."

I've never posted an article without commenting, so could someone please answer these questions:

    • Can you still use the "!" to flag the article as inaccurate or spam?
    • Can you still vote for the article?

In any case, it certainly absolves the author/seeder from having to moderate. That may be useful in certain situations.

They can indeed be both voted up and reported. Only comments may not be made on them.

Why do you not just ignore the articles? Or write an article in response?

Not every article written has to be up for debate. Some people will write a personal story or an opinion piece on whatever just to have their voice heard but don't feel like going into a whole big back and forth over it. Guess what? That's perfectly okay. If it wasn't, viners would not have the option to close comments to begin with?

No one is forcing others to go to those articles and read them and if you do and it freaks you out -that- much that comments aren't open, I think you may be taking things a little too seriously here on the vine. No one is stopping you from writing your own article or making your own voice heard on whatever topics interest you so it's not like you don't have an outlet or your voice is somehow being silenced.

My advice to people who freak out that someone decides to not allow comments on their article is:

    Get. Over. It.

Some topics need comments closed due to the nature of the people opposed to the viewpoint and the lengths they are willing to go to de-rail the issue with BS. There are times when an author has to close comments due to an inability to moderate.

he is able to have HIS opinion constantly taking space from others who DO allow others to comment on their ideas and positions.

I hope we aren't running out of room in cyber space. (: Seriously, articles with no comments are hardly going to take over the front page. The writer may be using their NV column as a forum to hyper link to for their other blogs and not want to deal with comments on their linked articles.

Kind of a way of supporting their statements with articles they wrote.

Doing a project for NV I also noticed that we have this option of not allowing comments. I wouldn't consider it super trolling but it does hinder the author's noticeably on NV. I for one wouldn't mind seeing it changed to allow comments since it does contradict the whole motto of NV "Get smarter here" When your not getting others to respond and give their opinion on the subject.

However I've never seen anyone do it so this is the first I have even heard anyone doing such a thing.

I see nothing wrong with Newsvine effectively offering both discussion thread and blogs.

I have seen this happen only twice and I thought it rather odd but it is within their rights to do so.

I have voted "Allowed" because I believe in free speech.

If someone wants to tell me something but doesn't want to hear what anyone else thinks about it, then I am free to ignore them.

    Which I would.

It's almost like watching someone else eat cake, knowing you can't have any.! I can understand why our author is saddened by the inability to post comments.
